This false doorway recreates the ionic frontage of Joy’s antique shop in Edinburgh. A neo-classical addition to a squat doorway on a medieval thoroughfare, like much of the Old Town at the time it experienced the eighteenth century equivalent of ‘keeping up with the Joneses’. It has here been given a deco-makeover thus “reveal[ing] that pastiche is central to the desire to animate the past” .
